I spoke with Jason Rapaport, the president of the Fencing Club, concerning the possibility of the creation of a varsity women's fencing team. Rapaport stated that he had been contacted by Doug Harris two days earlier to discuss possible interest on the subject. Details are scarce on Harris's background and connection to the University. Although some students have suggested the possibility that the fencing club was approached because the women's swim team may not be panning out, this article suggests that all is well. An alternative explanation may be that they do not expect enough women to join the swim team to even out the numbers for Title IX requirements, or else that perhaps due to earlier miscalculations, another team must be added to avoid the elimination of an existing men's team. Either way, I want to know what's going on.
