School rankings obsolete

When U.S. News and World Report announced last month Vanderbilt ranked 18th among national universities, there was little discussion about the merits (or lack thereof) of this ranking. After all, Vanderbilt has found itself consistently within the "top 20" for a generation, so a tie with peer universities Emory and Notre Dame would probably arouse neither excitement nor disappointment.

Smoking ban reaches too far

For two decades, Vanderbilt University Medical Center has updated public smoking policies to reflect the idea that smoking “should not occur on a hospital campus.” First with a (reasonable) ban on indoor smoking in 1989, the policy expanded to defining and enforcing designated outdoor smoking areas around the hospital. This week, those smoking areas were abolished as all outdoor smoking on hospital grounds is prohibited.

GOP makes correct call for convention

With the convention beginning today after an unexpected vice presidential candidate announcement bounce, the GOP looked to be heading into a week of celebrating their ticket and platform in St. Paul. Instead, the Republican National Committee will be toning down the party for the party as Hurricane Gustav makes its way through the Gulf of Mexico toward the coast.
