Letter to the Editor

Finding a common view

To the Editor:

It is necessary to view The Commons qualitatively and accept the positives as well as the negatives. There is no reason that a definitive black and white label must be created to commend its success or condemn its failure, though both Greg Gauthier and Katherine Miller imply just that.

Students need guns

To the Editor:

The recent gunpoint robbery of another Vanderbilt student highlights the failed logic of “gun-free” zones. The current campus-wide firearms ban doesn’t keep students safe. Instead, it needlessly puts us at greater risk of violent crime.

The failure of bonding at The Commons

To the Editor:

In the past few weeks, I have read in The Hustler about the overall positive response to The Commons. I believe that the perception of such a popular positive assessment of The Commons is misguided and inaccurate.

YWC founder comments on Yang

To the Editor:

Soo Yang’s column “Youth for Western Civilization misses the point” states that I am a “white nationalist” and a founder of Youth for Western Civilization. Neither is true. In fact, it would be quite difficult for me to be a “white nationalist” as my mother is Asian.

Metro up for election

To the Editor:

While November’s elections for state and federal offices might now seem like ages ago, there are very important municipal elections being held this Thursday, March 26th for the Nashville Metro Council.

Anti-immigration denies diversity

To the Editor:

On Monday night, the Vanderbilt community took a stand against prejudice. In response to an event, publicized as an anti-immigration speech and hosted by Vanderbilt’s Youth for Western Civilization, students, faculty, staff and members of the Nashville community came out in a peaceful protest against intolerance.

LIVE commends Zeppos

To the Editor:

Two weeks ago, we as a community — including students, faculty, workers and faith leaders — marched to Kirkland in a symbolic action to protect the low-wage workers on our campus. We were proud to have members from our entire community present at this event, as it clearly showed No Cuts is a community-wide effort to help Vanderbilt workers who are most vulnerable in the university’s financial cut backs.

A perpetuation of a common misconception

To the Editor:

Carolyn Pippen began heropinion pieceby stating that the easiest way to garner public favor these days is to “sign anything that includes the terms ‘Bush-era’ and ‘overturn.’” I necessarily disagree. If I were trying to gain public approval, I’d much prefer to deliver uplifting news pertaining to the world’s dire economic situation, specifically, our nation’s own financial troubles.

Vanderbilt should revamp bookstore options

To the Editor:

Vanderbilt can and must do more to promote green and cost-cutting policies in its bookstore. The status quo is inefficient, the current practice is not environmentally sound, and the money being wasted could be much better spent elsewhere.
