When you're out fratting hard, perhaps a drink or two in, there are always those few songs that come on and you just go "I LOVE THAT SONG!" Here I've compiled my top ten choices for just such awesome frat jams that seemingly everyone knows.
10. "Love Story (Pop Remix)" - Taylor Swift
At first, seemingly a strange choice for a group of adolescent men, but look around the next time this song plays and check just how many people are singing along. Not just girls, either. What started as an ironic listening turns into an unabashed lyrical belting in the middle of a frat party. Come on, it's "Love Story"-just say yes.
9. "Summer of '69" - Bryan Adams
"I bought my first real six-string, something something something... it was the summer of '69!" Despite only knowing approximately ten percent of the lyrics to this song, there's no reason one cannot scream that chosen portion again and again. With love of eighties tunes leading frattastic musical endeavors, this Bryan Adams hit is a regular at all frat parties. It appears that nothing can last forever... except our love of this song.
8. "Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Normally played during the day, or sampled in the form of Kid Rock's somehow Grammy winning song, "Sweet Home Alabama" is the lead of the genre of southern rock that everyone knows and is familiar with, even from the very first guitar riff. Whether or not you're actually from the south, you probably know and love this song. On your porch with a beer hand, you definitely know and love this song.
7. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" - The Proclaimers
The lyrics of this song aren't really what matters, it's the weird yell thing that works incredibly well not only during the song, but also at any point. Trying to call out to someone far away, and have a few drinks in you? Do a quick call and response "buh duh duh duh." Additionally, hearing a bunch of guys attempt a Scottish accent while also attempting to sing is hilarious.
6. "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker" - O.A.R.
Leading the music that's not really seen at frat parties but more so at the ridiculously loud and often obnoxious (but also awesome) daytime fratting, this song is really just a representative of a. all O.A.R. songs, b. all Fray songs, and c. all other songs that are stereotypically fratty and somehow automatically loved by all men wearing letters.
5. "I'm On a Boat" - Lonely Island
Though a recent addition, this song definitely belongs in the top five. Not only does everyone know and love it, but it's so easy to call out the lyrics that you can't help but join in. Add in the fact that T-Pain is involved, and that it hits every awesome aspect of every rap song ever, and you've got what may be the most perfectly designed frat jam ever. However, it has not yet gotten past fad status-we'll see if it withstands the test of time.
4. "Your Love" - The Outfield
Until just now, I wasn't exactly sure what this song was about. What makes this a great frat jam is that it doesn't even matter-all you have to do is scream out "I don't want to lose your love tonight" (whether that's true or not), and go with the beat. Then, realize that it's also "I just want to use your love tonight," and realize how fitting it is for your sketchy dark bumping and grinding. And then attempt to forget it.
3. "Take Me Home Tonight" - Eddie Money
This song is catchy, sure, and classic (again, eighties music rules frats like Natty Light), but it breaks the top three by also combining the desires of ninety percent of the dancing males in any given frat party. Is that dude singing the lyrics or pleading with you? Perhaps a bit of both. This song is so Money.
2. "Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi
Oh, Bon Jovi. Made for frat action, you were. "Livin' on a Prayer" is merely the greatest of the hits by this (again eighties) star. Especially useful as a rally at around midnight (when you're oh, halfway there), this song can nonetheless be played at any point throughout the night (or day, for that matter).
1. "Don't Stop Believin'" -- Journey
One word: duh. Even if you're living in a lonely world, you know this to be the frattiest (and thus most awesome) song ever created. Though it probably wasn't intended as such when it was written and initially performed, this has become a drunken (and by extension fratty) anthem. If your midnight train is a silver bullet, then your Naturday is undoubtedly highlighted by Journey... at least once.
