We have seen their intricate formations on the football field during half time, and we have heard their medley of songs from afar during their numerous practices. The Spirit of Gold Marching Band is certainly not a foreign entity on campus, but many Vanderbilt students are not aware of all that the band does behind the scenes.
Tau Beta Sigma is a Greek organization on campus. However, unlike any other of the Greek organizations, it is co-ed and comprised solely of about 50 Vanderbilt Marching Band members. The purpose of Tau Beta Sigma is not only to promote the Spirit of Gold Marching Band, however. They also hope to spread an appreciation of band music throughout Nashville.
“The purpose of Tau Beta Sigma is also to promote music in the community,” said Tracy Hancock, senior and band president. “They focus on activities that help the band, but also go out into the community and do different service projects that promote music.”
One activity that was created by Tau Beta Sigma is the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational. It is a competition for high school marching bands all over the country that takes place each year in the Vanderbilt Stadium.
“VMI is a high-caliber competition. We bring in college band directors from all over the country to judge the competition. Another unique thing about VMI is that it is completely student-run,” Hancock said.
The Vanderbilt Marching Invitational is an extremely successful project of Tau Beta Sigma, bringing in about $40,000 to $50,000 that is used as scholarships for various members of the Spirit of Gold. So while the band continues to put on impressive performances on the football field, they are making equally impressive contributions to the local music scene of Nashville.
