This weekend, electronic music fans at Vanderbilt and throughout greater Nashville face a formidable lineup: two of mainstream electro’s most popular mashup artists, Girl Talk and Super Mash Brothers, will headline at our campus in one super mash weekend.
Friday night, legendary mashup mastermind Girl Talk will perform to a sold-out crowd in Memorial Practice Gym. Girl Talk’s albums “Night Ripper” (2006) and “Feed the Animals” (2008) are composed entirely of samples of other artists’ songs — from Roy Orbison to Radiohead to Lil’ Mama, no song or sample is off limits. Girl Talk (real name: Gregg Gillis) is returning to Nashville this week after last year’s controversial concert at The Cannery Ballroom, where the artist’s onstage antics and high-energy performance literally brought down the house: a broken water main and concerns for concertgoers’ safety ended the show early.
Newer to the scene are the Super Mash Brothers, a duo who have stormed to prom with their colorfully titled first album “Fuck Bitches. Get Euros.” Twelve tracks of mashup madness, “Fuck Bitches” doesn’t quite rival Girl Talk’s “Night Ripper” but shows promise that these up-and-comers may have the ability to follow in Girl Talk’s dancing footsteps. The Brothers have already dubbed themselves “Girl Talk’s hot cousin,” a claim to be put to the test this weekend at their performance at Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity on Saturday night. Their second album, “All About the Scrillions,” is out now and free for download online.
Whether your music tastes tend toward electronic, rap or even oldies, Girl Talk and the Super Mash Brothers will be sure to drop something this weekend to get crowds moving. Tickets for Girl Talk are sold out, but whether or not you’ll be breakin’ it down in the gym on Friday, make sure to stop by Lambda Chi on Saturday night to get your super mash fix.
