Versus editor Courtney Rogers sat down with Jordan Christy, Belmont graduate and author of "How to be a Hepburn in a Hilton World." The title sort of explains it.
Versus Magazine: You went to Belmont. Was it as different as it seems?
Jordan Christy: It wasn’t that different. There were parties where you could drink yourself senseless and post not-so-classy Facebook pictures afterwards.
VM: Can Facebook derail the would-be Audrey Hepburn?
JC: Ask yourself before the third round of drinks, would I want my grandmother to see me in this mini skirt? You never know who’s watching. A great guy who’s looking for a girl with style and dignity won’t look twice at the girl falling off the table at the bar. College is for finding out who you are as a person — a hundred years ago, girls didn’t have our opportunities, and we need to honor those women.
VM: What does the non-Audrey girl look like in 2009?
VM: How does the good girl land a guy, though?
JC: There are always those guys looking for a one-night stand, a short skirt and five minutes of fun. But is he the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? There’s a guy out there who wants a relationship. You’ll save yourself a lot of heartache and find a guy who does.
VM: Do you believe it’s never OK for the girl to make the first move? What’s the best advice for college dating?
JC: Ask any guy and 98 to 99 percent of them will say the thrill of the chase (attracts them most). The best advice is to put the phone away, stop texting him and writing on his wall. Approach the guy, see what’s there, then let him do the work. If he’s interested, he’ll call — and he’ll be more attracted to you. Beyond that initial meeting, it’s his job.
VM: Say you get the guy, what does a quality first date outfit look like?
JC: Well, I’m a skirt girl. If there’s a skirt with ruffles, I’m guaranteed to be buying it. Keep it casual, though, with a T-shirt or a button up — they’re more accessible. Flats are a girl’s best friend in a first date situation. Most importantly: Wear underwear! All of these images (of celebrities) have taught us, don’t party without panties. Dress to attract a nice guy and nice friends, and you will get the attention you deserve.
