Bragg Hall at Scarritt Bennett Center, 1008 19th Ave. S., was evacuated Sunday evening due to a carbon monoxide leak.

Three Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching fellows who are residents of Bragg Hall felt sick and went to the hospital Sunday evening, said Commander Brian Cozby of the Vanderbilt Police Department. The fellows, whose scholarship program is with Peabody College, stay at Bragg Hall as a part of their program. The hospital's test found them to have high levels of carbon monoxide.

Scarritt Bennett Center was informed of this and called in the Metro Fire Department, whose tests confirmed the high levels and evacuated Bragg Hall.

The fellows were released from the hospital with no complications. The carbon monoxide leak is believed to have been caused by a faulty heating element, Cozby said. VUPD responded when VUPD patrol cars saw Metro fire trucks and police on the scene.

WSMV-TV and The City Paper reported the incident took place on a Vanderbilt University off-campus dorm and that Vanderbilt students were sick. Scarritt Bennett Center is located near Vanderbilt University, but is not affiliated with the university and is not an off-campus dorm for Vanderbilt. The three fellows are not Vanderbilt students, but rather international Fulbright scholarship recipients.
