As a result of the time change, it is now getting darker earlier in the evening, so Vanderbilt Police Department is increasing its focus on pedestrian safety. Since 2006 there have been 69 traffic accidents involving pedestrians on streets near campus, according to VUPD.
Students are urged to take extra care when walking in areas that VUPD and Metro Police have identified as statistically hazardous for pedestrians. These areas are West End Avenue between 20th Avenue South and 31st Avenue South, 21st Avenue South between Broadway and Wedgewood/Blakemore, Pierce Avenue between 21st Avenue South and 24th Avenue South, and. 25th Avenue South between West End and Blakemore avenues.
VUPD also recommends the following tips for traveling safely around campus:
- Drivers and pedestrians should drive and walk defensively.
- When crossing streets, make eye contact with drivers before proceeding into the street.
- Cross at or near intersections when possible.
- Drivers need to slow down. (The speed limit on and around campus is 30 or less in most areas.)
- Both pedestrians and drivers should stay off their cell phones in order to pay attention to their surroundings.
- Learn and abide by Tennessee laws as they relate to driver and pedestrian interactions.
