It’s about that time for another James Cameron film.

This rendition is a far cry from his “never let go” “Titanic” drama and back to his sci-fi roots a la “Terminator” and “Alien.” “Avatar,” his newest child, released its theatrical trailer to the world recently, a 3:31 second hint at the themes and narrative spine of the film.

Avatar’s visuals look amazing; all the talk about revolutionizing CG techniques are true — these graphics are sure to shock everyone with their clarity and fantasy-realism. Not only are the characters brilliantly CGIed, but also the world that they live in, Pandora. Beyond the visuals, the story arc surrounds one man plugged into a genetically engineered clone of an alien race, possessing full control of the body. This race’s home is sitting on top of a mine of a mineral worth an ungodly sum. His goal to get this race to relocate.

Guess what? They don’t want to, and the main character is not so sure they should have to, either. In turn, social and environmental commentary is scattered throughout. From what I’ve seen, this movie will live and die on the audience’s ability to connect with this alien race. If it can connect, as Speilberg got us to with the child-like innocence of E.T, this movie could revolutionize the genre and gross much more than that movie where the ship hits the ice cube.
