According to a recent New York Times article, the representatives present at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Singapore decided to put off making explicit agreements to handle potential future climate change. Instead, the representatives have decided to use the upcoming Copenhagen conference to make politically binding agreements that lack the specifics required for proper enforcement.
According to the deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs, the decision to post-pone more specific requirements was due to the consensus that it would be unfeasible to plan concrete, legally binding terms within the few weeks leading up to Copenhagen.
While understandable, this brings up the question of when world leaders intend to act – a sort of if not now, when thing. Representatives from all over the globe have met at multiple conferences with the intentions of setting official carbon emission caps and deadlines, but up until this point, there is no sign of improvement. At the rate things are going, the general public better hope global warming is a myth, because if it isn’t, we’re all screwed.
