Vanderbilt University has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, according to the university.
The Corporation for National and Community Service named six colleges or universities as Presidential Awardees, 115 to the Distinction List and 621 schools to the Honor Roll. Provost Richard McCarty said this recognition shows that Vanderbilt students are committed to using their education to better the world they live in.
"This honor goes to each person on this campus that identified a challenge, organized a group of committed individuals and worked to be part of the solution," he told the university.
Some of the community service groups on campus include Alternative Spring Break, which about 440 students are participating in this week, Vanderbuddies, a weekly tutoring service and Vanderbilt Students Volunteering for Science, a group of students who teach science lessons at area middle schools.
