The 2010 tornado season has begun and Vanderbilt University wants to ensure students are aware that the Vanderbilt campus and Metro Nashville operate on independent severe weather warning systems, according to the university.

Vanderbilt's campus uses a commercial weather monitoring company to warn the Vanderbilt community of severe weather. According to the university, if a tornado is within 15 minutes of campus, the Vanderbilt University Police Department will activate the Vanderbilt Severe Weather Warning System.

This system is not to be confused with the Metro sirens that would be activated if a tornado warning is given for any part of Davidson County. Students would be able to hear the sirens located in Fannie Mae Dee Park and Centennial Park, though they do not indicate severe weather for the campus.
