Occasionally I like to take the position of devil's advocate and present the views and profiles of Vanderbilt Student Communications adversaries. Without further ado, here are today's most noted Vanderbilt media critics:
AARON STANNARD: The creator of thriving Internet hub VandyStudents.com, Aaron Stannard's views are made most clear in the post "What Is Wrong With Vanderbilt Student Publications?" Notable quotes include "Maybe my mindset isn't appropriate for the student-run publication atmosphere, given that I approach my publication with the same callous ruthlessness that I apply to my work" and "If I saw a Versus cover with some bare breasts on the front I would read it in an instant."
Do these quotes, then, imply that he would approach bare breasts with the same callous ruthlessness that he applies to his work? And, if so, has Mr. Stannard thereby limited his dating pool to half-orcs?
BEN KARP: While I can appreciate the sentiment of the "In-Depth Journalism Club," I'm not sure how deliberately depriving himself of The Vanderbilt Hustler's resources just to make some sort of point about independence is going to bring many facts to light. People at least listen when an AP publication wants answers, while Kirkland Hall is unlikely to give the time of day to a hobbyist club. Also, while the Facebook group linked above has six members, I think they may be imaginary or maybe they got drunk with power and destroyed each other since it's been a while since I've seen an IDJC post, even on VandyStudents.com.
JOE HILLS: The editor-in-chief of The Slant has also taken up the burden of reforming The Vanderbilt Hustler, but not in any way that might possibly be useful such as joining the staff or challenging for editorship. "The Hustler staff was not present to report on the results" just might be the most non-productive sentence I have read all week. Also, it would appear that The Vanderbilt Hustler did, in fact, report on the election, and with a much greater degree of depth than Hill's reporting. I believe that makes the score The Vanderbilt Hustler ONE MILLION, Hills 0.
That concludes this cursory report on the state of Vanderbilt media criticism. Joe Hills was not present to report on the meticulous crafting of this blog post.
