To the Editor:

The Vanderbilt Student Government was created by and for the students. It will bring you better and more cohesive representation, a more navigable and focused structure, and the continuation of all the services and programs you now enjoy. The idea to merge was initiated by Interhall and Student Government Association members, but VSG is a product of the student voice: you participated in the process of creating the organization, you contributed to the constitution, and you attended the forums held to garner student input and opinion. Ultimately, however, VSG is a product of the student vote, which ratified the Vanderbilt Student Government Constitution at 92 percent approval Nov. 27, 2006. Interhall, SGA and the student body voted for this new organization, with the trust that one united government could produce real reform and real results.
That said, nothing in its inception is perfect. While some leaders might take Friday’s editorials to heart or feel attacked, we are renewed. It is encouraging that students care enough about student representation and governance to challenge it. VSG and its constitution will grow and change like any other entity, and we encourage all students to get involved with VSG and to voice their concerns to student leaders.
Finally, Interhall and SGA feel the experience requirement for the student body president and executive vice president will ensure a smooth transition into a new era of student representation. Because we pledge to continue all of the services and programs Interhall and SGA currently offer, including VandyVans, Dinner Discussions, shuttle services and so many more, we wanted to make sure that meaningful initiatives did not get lost in the transition. We stand behind the clause, as outlined in the constitution, to require experience for this year’s student body president and executive vice president. We also assure you that the VSG was created to better represent student voice and opinion and to establish a stronger, more streamlined organization that could better serve your interests. Vanderbilt belongs to all of us; let’s work together to make it better.

Devin Donovan, Interhall President
Boone Lancaster, SGA President
