I feel a lot of ambivalence about the Internet. Yes, theoretically anything I write has a truly global reach, but at the same time I am merely one voice crying out in the wilderness. It is one of those truly rare situations that is both empowering and daunting. I have faith that we know what we're doing, but at the same time we're competing with Internet pornography and the Anarchist's Cookbook for attention. I'm not sure words on a screen can compete with all of that nudity and those explosives.

Given that it is far from difficult to stumble on X-rated materials, I'm not sure anything can compete.

Yet, I remain confident that we will succeed so long as we do not moderate with too heavy a hand. Nothing stifles a community more quickly than overly-zealous enforcement.
