The fans just booed the home team as they came off the field.
Quite the first half...here are our grades:
Offense: C
We didn't put up too many points, but we were creative when given the opportunity. Nickson is very elusive and can escape trouble easily, but we need to be able to throw the ball with more consistency. Other than the Nickson fumble, we didn't turn the ball over which is key. We'd like to see a better running attack in the second half and a couple of deep balls.
Defense: B+
After the way the game started, it looked as though it would be a long day. But the defense didn't back down and has played well ever since. Forcing the fumble was huge and the d-line seems to putting more pressure on Henne which is critical. The Dores have to watch Breaston more carefully in the second half.
Special Teams: A
Blocked kick was the turning point in the game so far. Washington looks to be a good return man, Hahnfeldt did his job and Upson looks poised as the punter. It's strange seeing the special teams as something we can count on, but it has certainly been the case.
Other thoughts:
-The crowd wasn't too big of a factor. They got loud on certain third down situations, but the Dores didn't seem bothered. Only one false start and I don't even think you can blame it on the noise.
-People around the country must be pretty impressed with Vanderbilt. No one expected it to be so close at the half. Even though we were outplayed, it's still close and that's all you can ask for.
-We need a long, sustained drive. Time of possession is 19 minutes to 11 minutes in UM's favor. We need a long drive (runs, short passes, screens) to keep our defense fresh. If not, they will be worn out by the fourth quarter.
-Total NET Yards: UM 236, VU 88.
-Keep the faith. It's going to be a great second half. Lloyd Carr can feel the fire under his seat right now. There's a lot of pressure on him in this half, while Bobby and the Dores can go out there and have fun and try to pull off one helluva upset.
