The song "#1 Crush" by Garbage comes from the soundtrack album for 1996's "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The song was selected from among the band's B-sides, especially from the singles, "Vow" and "Subhuman.""#1 Crush" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 1994 recording sessions for Garbage's debut album, notable for producing the band's biggest hit, "Stupid Girl."

The music was sung to a hard industrial beat, but in 1996, the song was remixed by producer Nellee Hooper (well known for work with Bjork and No Doubt) and who removed most of the guitars and gave the music a more electronic and mysteriousquality. Hooper also added a distorted vocal sample from "Bedtime Story" by Madonna, released two years before (and another song I highly recommend).

Band frontwoman Shirley Manson said that the lyrics were written from the perspective of an obsessive stalker. Speaking of the song, she said, "All real love is a form of obsession, if you love someone more than anything else, that degree of exclusivity requires an abnormal amount of passion and care. And that can be positive. It's just that keeping it short of unhealthy, short of violence, really
requires a bit of moderation. You can't let something like that takeover all of your thought processes."

The song peaked at #29 on the Billboard Airplay Hot 100 Chart in 1996, likely due to the fact that no official single was released, and the band never made a video.

So if you're feeling bleak or harboring your own obsessive crush, or even just want to rock out, this is your song.
