The new Starbucks location in the Student Life Center will open April 30.

In preparation for the opening, Vanderbilt Dining has been completing the behind-the-scenes work of coordinating with vendors and planning inventory.

"The national brand of Starbucks requires that we follow very strict standards, especially for training potential employees, who will require full days of training for a week in order to become employees," said Director of Dining Services Lida Horna.

Horna said Dining will continue to work with Starbucks to determine the new location's hours of operation.

"For fall hours, Starbucks recommends that we be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., as most of their stores are," Horna said. "However, we are working on extending the hours and will adjust them depending on popularity."

Sophomore Lauren Grossman said a coffee shop open past midnight would make up for a current lack of late-night dining options.

"There are no coffee shops in Nashville open past 11:30 p.m., and most college students are doing work until well past midnight," she said. "A Starbucks on a college campus should be open until at least midnight."

Horna said she and her staff are currently working to develop advertisements to attract student employees. Since employee training is so rigorous, students may have to return to school a week early in the fall.

Horna said she does not foresee any problem in attracting student workers.

"We have already received two e-mails from students who are interested in working, without even advertising for positions, which is a sign that we will be successful in getting student employees," she said.
