Peter Smith, a professor of political science at the University of California at San Diego, discussed the resurgence of left-of-center political leaders in Latin America and the consequences for the United States in a March 23 lecture co-sponsored by the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies and the Department of Political Science.

Smith, the Simon Bolivar Professor of Latin American Studies, is the author of "Democracy in Latin America: Political Chance in Comparative Perspective."
