The annual U.S. News and World Report's Graduate School Rankings are not available until tomorrow at the earliest, but leaks of the rankings have been available since early this week on numerous pre-law, pre-med, pre-business, and other discussion boards and websites.
Overall, Vanderbilt programs faired well in the latest set of rankings by the New York-based magazine.
The University's biggest jump came from the Owen Graduate School of Management, which moved from a tie for 49th place nationally a year ago to a tie for 34th place along with Penn State University's Smeal School of Business.
Another big move came from Peabody College, whose graduate education program moved from fifth a year ago to a tie for 3rd with Harvard University. The Peabody Special Education program remained first in the nation, according to the rankings set for public release March 31.
Vanderbilt's School of Law gained one spot to number 16, tied with the University of Southern California. Vanderbilt's School of Medicine dropped one spot to number 18.
The School of Engineering's graduate program jumped five spots to number 42 in this year's rankings, placing it in a three-way tie with Washington University in St. Louis and Lehigh University.
The U.S. News and World Report "Best Graduate Schools" Rankings are released annually to anxious students and administrators nationwide. Many have criticized rankings as unnecessary, arbitrary, and too dominant in the graduate school decision-making process.
