The work was long, difficult and hot, but coordinated Move-In Day efforts passed efficiently for nearly 1,600 new students and their families.

The goal was “make it through today seamlessly,” parking lot marshal Glen Smith said Saturday.

Newcomers began to move into their new homes in Branscomb Quad, Kissam Quad, Vanderbilt and Barnard Halls, and Carmichael Towers East as early as 7 a.m. They were greeted by the Move Crew, a volunteer work force of over 800 upperclassmen who braved 99-degree temperatures to help freshmen move their belongings.

“It’s going well. Parents are thrilled because it’s really nice to have Move Crew,” said senior VUceptor Carli Bontrager.

Parents and students alike agreed they were grateful for the help.

“It was so efficient, and everyone was happy to help us,” said Leslie Pritchard, mother of freshman Sarah Baccich.

And Move Crew workers only had a few complaints.

“It was hard and hot, but still good exercise,” said sophomore David Rutz.

New students gathered with their VUcept orientation groups later in the afternoon for Founders Walk, a symbolic march through the main entrance on West End Avenue.

Members of many student organizations, along with faculty, staff and administration, greeted the students.

“It was kind of amusing,” said freshman Shira Paul, “because all of the people must have been there for a while screaming at all the people before us.”

Students sat in front of Wilson Hall after the walk to listen to speeches by Interim Chancellor Nick Zeppos and several others. The event concluded with a picnic on Alumni Lawn but was cut short by a brief rain shower.

“I think it’s a good tradition. Everyone was really involved,” said freshman John Foshee.

Move-In Day is memorable for freshmen and their families because they are exposed to many different organizations and upperclassmen from the very beginning.

“I just think it’s neat that all the organizations across campus are involved with Move Crew,” Bontrager said. “No other campus is like this.”
