Sung In Kim, a Vanderbilt student diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, is in stable condition today, said a hospital official.

Kim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center early Monday morning with a severe headache and fever. Tests revealed she had bacterial meningitis, a potentially fatal swelling of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

She is now out of the intensive care unit and is in stable condition, said hospital spokesperson John Howser.

Students who may have had close contact with Kim were encouraged to visit the Student Health Center for free treatment. About 45 students responded and were treated with Cipro, a strong antibiotic.

Howser said the hospital has not seen any more bacterial meningitis cases since Monday.
