Today I received an email from my RA detailing the results of the recent safety inspections. My room tied for first for the most safety violations on our hall (3) and here they are: 1) Toaster. This was the most popular violation of my hall at 6 out of 11 rooms. Please tell me why a toaster is a safety violation. I live in Morgan, our rooms have kitchens, and in these kitchens are stoves. I can think of tons of ways I can burn myself or cause a fire with a stove: you can forget to turn the stove off, you burn yourself on the electric stove top burners, you can destroy a plastic container by setting it on electric burners because they were black and you thought they were cool but your roommate just finished boiling some water and the coils were no longer orange, etc. Hmmm ok, so lets see how dangerous a toaster is. You can't leave a toaster on forever (not mine anyway), it "pops" after a certain amount of time. The hot part of the toaster is on the INSIDE of the toaster so you would have to be an idiot to stick your finger in a burn yourself. Unless you wash the toaster while it is still plugged in, I don't see how a toaster is nearly as dangerous as the oven we are given. 2 & 3) Well we got 2 for 1 by hanging a string of lights on our sprinkler pipe (I found this amusing). Now I am not a decorative person, the lights are my roommate's, but the sprinkler pipe is 3 inches in diameter. I don't know when the last time you hung up a string of *10* lights was but they don't weigh more than a few ounces. Maybe the "no lights" rule has merit (fire hazard, etc.) but come on, I have seen people do pull-ups on those sprinkler pipes (I do not recommend this behavior mind you). In conclusion, all that is going to happen is that people will hide this stuff before the second inspection (if they are smart) and then take it back out again after the inspection is over so no harm done I guess.
