The crowd is back into the game after a big punt return by South Carolina. CB Josh Allen saved a touchdown by breaking up a near-catch in the endzone. The Gamecocks had 4th and 2 from the 9-yard line and head coach Steve Spurrier left his offense on the field to go for it. But an illegal formation penalty set them back five yards and they settled for a field goal. My biggest observations of the first half -Mackenzie Adams looks great. He made one mistake on his intercepted throw but has run the ball very well when the opportunity is there. He is the team's leading rusher with 41 yards on seven carries. He has also spread the ball to several different receivers, who have done an excellent job on their routes and catching almost everything. -The running game is non-existent. Cassen Jackson-Garrison, Jeff Jennings, and Jared Hawkins have combined for nine yards on 13 carries. They need to step up their game because the offensive line isn't doing a terrible job of protection. -The defense looks excellent. DJ Moore and Ryan Hamilton, and the other DBs are having a field day breaking up passes and limiting the Gamecocks passing attack. There have been very few runs, and save for Cory Boyd's one 22-yard breakout, they haven't been effective either. The South Carolina QBs have been sacked four times, pressure has been constant. -Brian Hahnfeldt... that was a very easy field goal he missed, centered and everything. There has been some wind, but his Gamecock counterpart has made both his attempts from comparable distance. He needs to make those 35-yarders. Keys for the second half -Keep the pressure up. The 'Dores need to keep blitzing and forcing bad throws from Chris Smelley, he's made several. But they need to capitalize too; Ryan Hamilton and DJ Moore have both dropped easy picks. -Establish the run. The running game needs to get going. Mackenzie Adams can't win this one all by himself. Vandy needs at least 10 more points to win this game. -Win the battle of field position. Other than the last punt, the Commodores have been dominating the battle of field position, starting many of their drives beyond their own 40, and forcing three South Carolina drives to start inside their own three-yard line. South Carolina gets the ball first, stay tuned.
