I know it has only been a few years since we've built our current rec center near Morgan/Lewis and I understand it took the help of many generous alumni, but the reality is that it is inadequate. Our rec center serves its purpose quite effectively; but for a school of 11,000 some students, one cannot deny that it is too small to accommodate all of us. Being on one end of the campus doesn’t make it any easier for me to convince myself to go exercise at the rec. And even when I decide to go, I worry that the place may be too crowded, especially the basketball/racquetball courts. It happens quite often and to many people. For a prestigious school with more than 2.6 billion dollars in endowments, we sure do have a lacking gym. It’s a wonder why more students aren’t over weight and in poor health. I have heard plans to incorporate a type of health club into the new Commons project which will house the freshmen starting fall of ’08. I don’t think this is an adequate solution for the entire body of students at Vanderbilt. In short, I believe our current rec center doesn't fully satisfy our needs. Even if it isn’t built before I graduate, I would like to see a new central rec center in the future, for the sake of our future Vanderbilt students.
