Every week from now until March Madness begins I'll be posting the link to ESPN writer Joe Lunardi's Bracketology, where he places the 65 teams most likely to make the NCAA tournament and their likely seedings.
Teams move up and down in the seedings, as well as on and off the Bubble list, based on strength of schedule, current rankings and how they've been recently playing.
Currently, Bracketology projects the SEC to have only four teams make the tournament, making it the least represented of the six major conferences. The Big East currently leads the pack with nine teams projected to make the tournament.
Vanderbilt is projected currently to be a no. 5 seed in the tournament, with Tennessee getting a no. 1 seed. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are the only other two SEC teams projected to get bids.
At this point, a no. 5 seed for Vanderbilt seems about right. While its record of 17-2 is impressive, the lack of strong wins is what holds Vanderbilt back from getting a higher seed. Beating Florida and Ole Miss on the road, or at least splitting those two games, is essential if Vanderbilt wants to strengthen its tournament credentials and earn a better seed.
Some might be surprised to not see a 15-3 Florida team on the list, but the Gators had one of the most cookie-cutter non-conference schedules in the SEC. They'll need to have a very good conference record if the two-time defending national champions want to impress the tournament committee.
