The storyline for both the Commodores and the Rebels reads pretty much the same. Both teams ran the table in non-conference play against so-so opponents. Now, each squad is 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference and desperately needs this game not only to get back in the hunt for the league title but also for a much-needed boost in morale. This should be an incredible game, and the winner will be the team who wants it more.

Maybe the women’s basketball team can do what the men certainly couldn’t: beat the Florida Gators at home. It certainly looks like a possibility, as both teams sport identical records: 14-6 overall, 3-2 in conference. Tina Wirth and Liz Sherwood lead the Commodores, while Marshae Dotson and Depree Bowden pace the Gators in scoring.

Vandy tennis players shine

While the past week hasn’t been particularly kind towards Commodore basketball, quite the opposite has been the case for the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Junior Courtney Ulery was named SEC women’s player of the week, while freshman Alex Zotov earned SEC men’s freshman of the week recognition. Ulery extended her 18-match streak in singles and doubles by helping her team defeat #23 Michigan and #9 Notre Dame. Zotov, a Belarus native, clinched a 4-3 win over Michigan State by winning his singles match against Tyler Sauerbrey.

Ulery is ranked thirteenth nationally in singles. “She's worked really hard and improved both her singles game and her doubles game,” said women's tennis coach Geoff Macdonald.

“We certainly drew the short end of the stick on the schedule early in the season, but you have to play them where they show up on the schedule. It doesn't get any easier because they've been an outstanding team at home and on the road.”
