CULTURE: Then and Now: Compare and contrast

1980s: Flash back to leggings, torn sweatshirts and power suits a la Patrick Bateman. Despite the birth of “Thriller,” the Valley Girl and oh-so-attractive shoulder pads, ’80s fashion has been an unlikely influence on the styles of today.

Whether it be on the streets or the runway, today’s fashion icons sport leggings paired with oversized sweaters, pumps, bright colors, Wayfarers and, of course, preppy staples. We see celebrities posing in bubble skirts and Lindsey Lohan wearing fingerless gloves almost daily.

Before you start referring to “The Wedding Singer” and the “Like a Virgin” music video for fashion tips, consider subtler versions. Instead of wearing lacy lingerie as outerwear, why not look to Bill Blass, J. Mendel and Blumarine for their Spring 2008 lace ensembles. Cute, tailored blazers and mini skirts fit the ’80s preppy trend, but remember to stay away from shoulder pads and rolled up sleeves.

And while the leggings-as-pants debate still rages, if you support this current trend, be sure your pair is in a neutral color. A Vandy girl in hot pink spandex might easily be mistaken for an overzealous fraternity groupie on a “walk of shame” from the Miami Vice party the night before. No one wants to be that girl. However, bright colors in small doses might just be the cure to winter’s overcast skies. Neon clutches, shoes and scarves (worn separately, of course) can both accentuate the neutrals in your closet and help you catch the eye of that looker you poked on Facebook last night.

Everyone loves a classic “Punky Brewster” episode, but remember to just say no to acid washed jeans, teased hair, slap bracelets and leg warmers. Return to the ’80s primarily in spirit — tweak the trends to fit 2008’s styles, and never wear more than one ‘80s-inspired piece at a time.
