The Vanderbilt Men’s tennis team earned two wins on
the weekend against the Samford Bulldogs (0-3) and the Memphis Tigers (2-2).
The No. 33 Commodores improve to 3-0 on the young season.
It was smooth sailing for the Commodores as they
swept the Bulldogs 7-0. Doubles was close, with two going to a tiebreaker, but
singles was dominated by the heavily favored Dores.  Ryan Preston, playing
at No. 1, notched his first win of the season in the third (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Vijay Paul was the low man for the day with his double bagel victory (6-0, 6-0)
at the two position.
Sunday was more of the same, with the Commodores
claiming a 6-1 victory over the Memphis Tigers.  The team’s play gave
Coach Ian Duvenhage a lot to like. "I'm very happy with where we
are," said Duvenhage. "We've got a long way to go, but so far so
good."
The team dispatched the Tigers in doubles with ease.
Nick Cromydas and Evan Dufaux upset the duo from Memphis that had captured the
doubles title in the fall at the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament by a score
of 8-4.
The Dores contined their strong play in singles with
convincing wins.  Ryan Preston defeated a hard hitting opponent 6-3, 6-4
while Vijay Paul upended his foe 6-1, 6-2.  The freshmen proved strong as
well, as Bryant Salcedo prevailed in the third set (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) and Alex
Zotov, the reining SEC freshman of the week, won 6-4, 7-6 (2).
The Commodores are off until Thursday when they host New
Mexico at 2 p.m.
