With a deep, contested 3-pointer from the corner, senior Shan Foster cemented himself as a Vanderbilt legend.
Foster scored 22 points against Arkansas to pass Matt Freije as the all-time leading scorer in Commodore history. The incomparable senior now has 1,895 points for his illustrious career.
It was fitting that the shot that put him past Freije was as difficult as it was. Foster has made a living sinking shots that most people wouldn't even attempt, let alone make.
Also fitting was how clutch the shot was. With his team down by four points, Foster nailed the 3 from deep in the corner with 1:39 left, temporarily deflating what was a loud and boisterous crowd at Arkansas' Bud Walton Arena.
Arkansas coach John Pelphrey was amazed.
"The one was so far down in the corner, he was in the cheerleaders down there," Pelphrey said.
That put him one point ahead of Freije, but Foster wasn't done. When Vanderbilt was down by four again, Foster swished another contested shot from beyond the arc to keep the Commodores breathing.
It was another outstanding performance down the stretch that has become commonplace in the last month. His play in February was key to every victory, most notaby his clutch shooting against South Carolina that kept Vanderbilt alive as time was winding down, as well as his amazing play against No. 1 Tennessee where he scored 32 points. In his last eight games, Foster shot at least 53 percent from the field in six of them and made 32 3-pointers in 68 attempts.
His play against the Razorbacks wasn't enough in the end, as Arkansas elected to start fouling other players to stop Foster from touching the ball again. The Razorbacks wound up winning, 78-73.
Losing the game also caused the record-setting day to lose a bit of its luster.
"It is more important to me that we play as a team; whether we win or lose we do it as a team," Foster said.
Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings still took time to praise his best player.
"Shan was terrific," Stallings said. "In fact, he's been terrific all season long."
Along with Foster, the Commodores have also been terrific all season long and are headed to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. They have their senior leader to thank for helping them get there.
Foster's not the type of player who puts much stock in personal statistics. He wants his team to win more than he wants to pad his scoring.
"I have never put my focus to breaking the record," Foster said.
But he still did. And there are plenty of games left for Foster to not only cement his name in the record books, but continue to make this season one to remember for Vanderbilt.
