Some students have looked for easier standards to keep the lottery scholarship, but they may only get more time to attain the currentgrade-point average requirement.
A proposal discussed in the state Senate Education Committee on Wednesday would allow students to keep the annual $4,000 HOPE scholarship with a 2.75 cumulative grade-point average for their first two years. They would have to raise it to 3.0 by the end of their junior year.
"Hopefully those courses are a little bit easier by their senior year," Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro, told The Tennessean. Ketron chaired a subcommittee that made the recommendation to the full committee.
Gov. Phil Bredesen's proposal, however, would allow students to keep the scholarship with a 2.75 cumulative grade-point average for all four years of college. Currently students must maintain a 2.75 GPA during their freshman year and have a 3.0 GPA by the end of their sophomore year.
