Whether you're ready or not, summer is right around the corner, and it's time to bid adieu to the Vanderbubble and start thinking about your summer wardrobe. Even if you plan on spending more time in a florescent-lit office padding your resume than in the great outdoors bronzing your skin, there are always a few spare weekends in which to hit the beach. In the summer, I can't live without white Bernardo flip flips, embroidered Mexican blouses, a roomy tote, aviator sunglasses and printed sundresses.
Bernardo sandals are refreshing substitutes for my staple Rainbows and Haviannas; They can be dressed up with a sundress or flouncy skirt and dressed down with cut-offs and a simple camisole. The understated white "Miami" style conjures up '60s-style glamour, and these classics were favored by the Lilly Pulitzer set back in the day. Today, Bernardos come in several different styles and colors, although I personally prefer the contrast of the traditional white against sun-kissed toes.
Embroidered Mexican tunics are ideal for salty summer days. Whether they are souvenirs from spring break or purchased from an online boutique, these funky tops look great with jeans, chunky sandals, and wind-blown hair. Nothing says summer like this carefree blouse (which conveniently flatters all body types), and I especially like wearing mine with the forever-chic Ray Ban aviators. If you're like me and didn't make it to Mexico this March, Free People and Anthropologie carry a variety of styles that might tickle your fancy, although Ebay usually offers fabulous vintage options.
Make sure that your closet has a spacious bag that can travel from the streets to the sand as well. Being the Northeastern girl that I am, I am prone to carrying monogrammed L.L.Bean totes to the beach, although classic straw bags are lovely, too. This summer, I am gravitating toward Lauren Merkin's Cassie Beach Tote and Tory Burch's Nautical Tote.
Finally, a printed sundress is an obvious requirement for any girl in the coming months, and no matter how much or little you spend, you are bound to look cute. I love the dainty spaghetti straps on Calypso Christiane Celle dresses and the bright colors of the breezy Toucan Mini Dress by Antik Batik. Look for airy fabrics with flowery or muted tie-dye prints, and you'll be good to go. Just remember to apply sunscreen!
