BASEBALL: Vanderbilt triumphs in first round of SEC Tournament

A few days off never hurt.

After backing into the postseason with five straight losses and having four days to think about it, Vanderbilt beat Florida, the same team that swept the Commodores last weekend, 7-3 in the first round of the SEC Tournament

Mike Minor pitched five innings for the win, with Drew Hayes and two other relievers pitching four shutout innings in relief to preserve the victory. Vanderbilt had held leads in four of the previous five games but had failed to hold them.

David Macias drove in two runs, Dominic de la Osa scored one and drove in one, and Andrew Giobbi and Steven Liddle had three hits apiece.

The Commodores (38-18) advance to face No. 2-seeded LSU (40-16-1), winners of 17 straight games.
