So, even though we'll know shortly and it will probably be T-Paw, I thought this might be of interest. Kleinheider linked to a Race 4 2008 post about why McCain won't pick Lieberman, so sayeth Matt:
"The major thing standing in the way of a Lieberman Vice-Presidential pick for McCain is a seemingly small thing - an RNC rule that states that a Vice Presidential nominee must have been a Republican for at least 60 days prior to nomination.
"There are only two ways around that rule as far as I know - the first being that Lieberman has already switched his party affiliation a couple months ago secretly without letting anybody know (highly, highly, highly unlikely). The other option would be for the delegates to vote to waive that rule at the RNC — and it’s not hard to imagine how that would go."
Well, I just read through the RNC rules, and no such rule exists, though several would be major obstacles, which ABC News detailed last month. Basically rules eleven and forty:
Rule 11.a The Republican National Committee shall not, without the prior written and filed approval of all members of the Republican National Committee from the state involved, contribute money or in-kind aid to any candidate for any public or party office except the nominee of the Republican Party or a candidate who is unopposed in the Republican primary after the filing deadline for that office.
Rule 40.b Each candidate for nomination for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States shall demonstrate the support of a majority of the delegates from each of five (5) or more states, severally, prior to the presentation of the name of that candidate for nomination.
So: the RNC and Victory 2008 can't give money to a Democrat, and the delegates who are on the books as preferring Mitt Romney (by only 38%) would have to sign off on the Lieberman pick, knowing that it would easily be nixed by others. Prisoner's dilemma!
