Much to the relief of many students and administrators, the all-purpose student tailgate lot, which was supposed to be a safe haven for Vanderbilt students to come together and tailgate before football games, has been terminated after one year.
According to Assistant Director of Greek Life Tanner Marcantel, the tailgate lot was originally meant to give students flexibility in their social options before the football game.
"The student tailgate lot was a push from Vandy Fanatics for a space for a designated student tailgate area," said Marcantel. "A lot of fraternities took advantage of that option even though it wasn't mandated. Unfortunately, students weren't holding each other accountable and the lot was shut down because the question was raised as to whether it was worth the trouble or just to get rid of the student lot altogether."
Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity junior Tom Rosen said he thought the tailgate lot was meant to cut down on the visibility of fraternity tailgating. "One of the goals of having tailgates over at the student lot was to make the tailgating less visible to outsiders, school administrators and students. Also, at the tailgate lot it was less segregated - the average student who was or wasn't Greek could tailgate over there. Having it in the student lot made tailgating as an entire student body possible."
Tailgating will return to fraternity houses this year and will remain there, as long as the same rules and regulations that existed in the pre-tailgate lot times are practiced. With the first football game being on a Thursday night, this presents many challenges for professors whose students will start tailgating for the game early that afternoon.
Anthony Landsberg, a junior in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, said his fraternity will be slightly more cautious with their tailgate because of past tailgating experiences and the increased security. He also said he didn't think the tailgates would interfere or cause problems with the weekday traffic and campus activity.
In an effort to assuage the concerns of many students and faculty alike, members of the Greek community and administrators got together last Sunday and discussed ways of preventing problems on game night.
"The consequence of having it back now on campus is that it will be more available and closer to all of Vanderbilt. It will be more visible to everyone and it poses a lot of risk management issues for every house," said Rosen.

Another Tailgating Option
There is still the option for tailgating over in Vandyville for both Greek and non-Greek student organizations, as Vandy Fanatics has purchased ten tents for the entire season. Fanatics will host a tailgate in two of the tents for every home game (complete with free food and giveaways!) and our tents are open to anyone who is excited about Commodore football! Further, every registered student organization (including Fraternities and Sororities) has the option of renting one of the other eight tents in that area to tailgate in for a specific game. You can sign your group up for a tent by going to: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/spirit/tailgate.html.
We hope this system will foster a more responsible atmosphere while keeping the tradition of tailgating outside the stadium an option for students.

Be a better journalist
Could you make this article even more confusing? First, the article's titled 'Return of the tailgate', then in the first paragraph you say the tailgate was shut down, then you say the tailgate will return to campus....huh? It took me 5 minutes to figure out which 'tailgates' referred to the student lot, which referred to the frats, which 'tailgates' were just the general use of the word, and which 'tailgates' are the verb form of the word.
And you allude to the "challenges" and "past tailgating experiences" involved, but you skirt around and avoid mentioning what that "problem" actually is. State the facts- you're a journalist aren't you?- why don't you explicitly discuss the public intoxication and underage drinking? This is just silly.
