Freshman sorority hopeful Adelaide Hester wasn’t surprised to find more than 100 other young women filling the seats of the Student Life Center for Panhellenic Registration.
“I am so excited, I can’t wait to get started with the recruitment process and hopefully find the sorority that is right for me,” she said.
She went to the Sept. 7 Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment registration event to meet other freshman and  upperclassmen in the Vanderbilt community, with hopes of finding her own niche in a sisterhood that would help her become involved in philanthropic causes.
Having met and interacted with some upperclassmen since the start of classes, Hester said that her first impressions on Vanderbilt sorority girls are positive. “They all seem really nice and are always very helpful in answering any of my questions. It also seems like all of them absolutely love their sororities,” said Hester.
Other Vanderbilt prospective members like Hester, sat attentively as they listened to Emily Kveselis, Vice President of recruitment, share an overview of the registration process and the key milestones coming up in the next few weeks.
When asked what freshman girls should expect as they continue with the recruitment process, Kveselis enthusiastically explained that they should “definitely look forward to an exciting process.”
“I am looking forward to getting to know as many first years as I can and helping them find their sorority home,” Kveselis said.
On the subject of what qualities the individual chapters are looking for in new members, Kveselis suggested that the chapters look for students typify the average Vanderbilt student who is outgoing and involved.
Hester expressed her excitement to move forward and her current thoughts on the process. “At this point I am not sure which particular sorority I am most interested in, but I’m hoping the recruitment process will help me find out more about what each sorority is like and which will be the right one for me,” said Hester.
Lia Giannotti, Director of Greek Ambassadors shared some advice for freshman sorority hopefuls, as she advised them to “remain open-minded and take advantage of any recruitment type opportunities that come their way.”
The next formal recruitment event is Panhellenic Preview Day on Nov. 15, which according to Kveselis is “a day of mock recruitment, no scores nothing counts, but [prospective new members] get to practice talking, hear the cheers that the sorority women do when they enter the houses, so on the first day of display round they are not too overwhelmed by it all.”
Also, Kveselis suggested prospective new members attend Greek Week starting Sept. 23 and “start to meet sorority women, so that they will start to see where they’ll be for the Panhellenic process.”
