To the Editor:
The Hustler did a brilliant job covering the recent heinous acts committed by the Vanderbilt chapter of Sigma Chi. Not only did the poignant article clearly delineate the atrocious nature of the Sigma Chis’ crimes, they also made it easy for the general student body to identify these alleged scofflaws. What these irresponsible males did is beyond comprehension and they all deserve to be vilified for their tasteless actions.
As we all know, Vanderbilt students are held to the highest behavioral standards to preserve Vanderbilt’s impeccable reputation. Furthermore, these Greek delinquents should be swiftly punished due to the egregious nature of their crimes. The fact that Vanderbilt students had the audacity on a Saturday night to consume alcoholic beverages and ignite disruptive fireworks on an isolated campground is outrageous and unforgivable.
Recently, there has been much controversy surrounding the Hustler’s decision to include the mug shots of these criminals (and I stress the word “criminal”), but plainly anyone can see it was clearly justified. Thanks to Michael Warren, the remainder of the campus, which would never consider participating in such ghastly endeavors, is now able to successfully eschew these evildoers. Thank you, Michael Warren, for taking it upon yourself (the authors of the article are never worth listening to) to protect the rest of us innocent, pure students.
I would also like to defend Mr. Warren for the prudent positioning and extensive use of Hustler space to demonstrate the appalling acts committed by these “frat boys.” Obviously, the destructive and abusive nature of their crimes dwarfs any of the recent news to come out of Vanderbilt or Nashville in the past month. The alleged “disorderly conduct and underage consumption” committed Saturday, Sept. 20 is undoubtedly more newsworthy and deserving of Hustler space than the recent arrest of Associate Professor of Sociology James Lang for child pornography or the Nashville gas shortage.
I personally feel more comfortable now knowing exactly who of my so-called “peers” are truly doing the work of the devil here on Vanderbilt campus. From this point forward, I can only pray that the Hustler will put crystal clear pictures of all Vanderbilt students on the front page of the our newspaper who are guilty of such sinful crimes. The Hustler’s adept expose makes me question if other Greek organizations at Vanderbilt and around the country participate in underage drinking.
