College GameDay coming to the Commons for Vanderbilt-Auburn game

ESPN's College GameDay program will be coming to the Commons on Oct. 4 for the Southeastern Conference tilt between Vanderbilt and Auburn.

The crew of Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard will be coming to a Vanderbilt game for the first time in the history of the College GameDay show. Starting Friday for a brief period from 3:30-3:50 p.m. and then on Saturday from 9-11:00 a.m, they will be airing at the Commons Center patio with the cameras facing the back of Stambaugh House. The public is invited to attend both days; on Saturday, the gates will open at 7 a.m.

"ESPN wanted a location that showcases Vanderbilt University and meets all their needs," said Vice-Chancellor David Williams. "When their representatives saw the Commons location, they thought it was a natural site."

"It's an outstanding venue and makes a tremendous statement about our university," Williams added. "I know ESPN is happy and I know Vanderbilt University is delighted with the choice."

With Vanderbilt at No. 19 and Auburn at No. 13 in the Associated Press poll, the ESPN-televised game undoubtedly was going to be a top draw anyway. But with GameDay coming to town, the spectacle surrounding this Saturday's game grows even larger.

Chick-fil-A, the newest sponsor of the College GameDay telecast, will be sending team members to Nashville prior to the game to provide free samples of the restaurant's menu items, beginning at the GameDay site Saturday at 7:15 a.m.

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson was pleased with the news of the show coming to Nashville but remains focused on the true task at hand.

"GameDay is great for our fans but we're just focused on the game," Johnson said. "I told our team that we have to realize what the big event is here and that's the game."

Johnson addressed freshmen at the Commons dining center Monday evening, thanking the students for their great support thus far and encouraging them to maintain their fervor for the Auburn game.

"Be loud, be rowdy, and give Auburn hell," he said.

With a win, Vanderbilt would improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1943. Auburn stands at 4-1, 2-1 in the SEC after a 14-12 victory over Tennessee on Saturday.
