WOMEN'S TENNIS: Team playing in two different tournaments

The Vanderbilt women's tennis team returns to the courts as it heads to Bloomington, Ind., to partake in the Hoosier Classic. Six Commodores will make the trip as Catherine Newman and Courtney Ulery are out west playing in the Riviera ITA All-American.

Newman, a junior, clinched a spot in the ITA All-American championship draw after winning a three-set match to move to 3-0 for the tournament. All three of her victories have come over top-100 ranked players.

Ulery and Newman also played doubles together at the tournament but were eliminated by Georgia.

The Commodores are coming off an impressive start to their fall campaign at last weekend's Furman Fall Classic. Freshman Jackie Wu posted an undefeated, 3-0 mark en route to capturing the third-flight singles draw. The Holmdel, N.J., native defeated Northwestern's 11th-ranked Georgia Rose in straight sets for the championship. Chelsea Preeg and Erica Robertson opened their collegiate careers on the right track as they finished second and third in their respected bracket.

Vanderbilt will be one of seven schools participating in this weekend's tournament. The playing field consists of Indiana, Indiana State, Mississippi State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Purdue and Vanderbilt.

Singles competition will be played in a round-robin format while doubles play will be split into two eight-team draws. Play is scheduled to begin Friday at 10 a.m.
