In a sea of black and gold, Commodore supporters at this Saturday's home game against Auburn might see another color in the stands: pink.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Sigma Lambda Gamma sororities will attempt to "Pink Out" the stadium to fundraise for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Breast Cancer Awareness month.
"(The) aim is to address the many health issues and crises that face our community, especially minorities," said Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. member junior Sherie Byrd. "I think that people, once they see what it is and why we're doing it, will be willing to participate."
"Pink Out" T-shirts have been sold on the Wall this week and are available for purchase on Saturday at the tailgate. The shirts are to be worn during the game to show support for breast cancer research and awareness. All proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Both sororities wanted to collaborate on the event, which is taking place during Breast Cancer Awareness month, because of a shared history in advocating for the cause.
Sigma Lambda Gamma's philanthropy is breast cancer awareness and the Alpha Kappa Alphas have worked on projects with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization that supports breast cancer research.
The two organizations hope Family Weekend will enable them to recruit a large group of participants. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. member junior TaCara Harris said she wanted students and their families to get involved.
"We want everyone to be aware of the issues of breast cancer," said Harris.
Sigma Lambda Gamma, a new multicultural colony on campus, hopes to improve its recognition on campus by working with an established sorority like Alpha Kappa Alpha for what it feels is an important fundraiser.
"By doing events like this that really try to get the whole Vanderbilt community involved, (it) lets people see our name," said sophomore Mia Crusto, coordinator and social chair of Sigma Lambda Gamma.
