Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has named Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor for Research for the Vanderbilt Medical Center, the new dean of the Medical School, according to an article on Vanderbilt's News Network. Balser replaces Dean Steve G. Gabbe, M.D., who left in June for Ohio State University Medical Center when he was appointed as the senior vice president for health sciences and the chief executive officer.
Balser has served as interim dean since July 2008 and in addition to his new role as the 11th dean of the Medical School, Balser will also serve as vice chancellor for Health Affairs.
Balser earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in pharmacology from Vanderbilt in 1990 and returned in 1998, after training as a resident in anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins. He has since held a number of positions at VUMC including, associate dean for physician scientists and the chair of anesthesiology.
