On Friday, Nov. 7, the modern-day comedy "RolePlay" debuted at Neely Auditorium.
The play revolves around the dinner party of characters Julie-Ann and Justin, who are expecting to announce their engagement to their visiting parents. However, when the neighbors upstairs, feisty Paige Petite and strong-willed Mickey, get entangled in the elaborate event, uproarious and witty chaos ensues.
"Everybody's been in the situation of awkwardly meeting someone else's parents for the first time or being embarrassed by your own family, so we all have those issues, but this is presented more over the top and exaggerated," said senior Clare Fernandez, who plays Justin's mother Arabella.
The main conflict centers on evolving and intertwined relationships in a farcical way. While it may be extreme, the high degree of scenic realism and the natural chemistry of the actors make the play very relatable and captivating.
"The last play, ǃÚOur Town,' made you cry after the show, but this show will make you cry with laughter," said sophomore Jack Henderson, who plays Mickey.
"RolePlay" will be performed at 8 p.m. on Nov. 13, 14 and 15. Admission is free for undergraduates, $10 for the general public and $7 for graduate and professional students. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Neely Auditorium box office at (615) 322-2404 or by e-mailing laura.m.brock@vanderbilt.edu.
