The Vanderbilt basketball teams had a rough day on the road as the men's and women's squads were dropped by Georgia Tech and UC-Riverside, respectively.
Coach Kevin Stallings' squad headed to Atlanta hoping to forget about what the coach called an "embarrassing" loss to Illinois-Chicago, but the Commodores continued to struggle on offense in the 63-51 loss to the Yellow Jackets in the fourth consecutive year the teams have met.
Sophomore A.J. Ogilvy led Vanderbilt (5-3) with 15 points but the team made just 2-16 3-pointers and were dominated on the boards, 48-33. The Commodores lost consecutive games for the first time since January when they lost to Florida and Ole Miss.
"They completely out-athleted and outplayed us on the backboards," Stallings said. "They played harder."
Vanderbilt's lowest offensive output in the last four years was not a product of lack of effort though, Stallings said.
"Our energy was good," Stallings said. "It wasn't a case of not playing hard. We didn't shoot the ball, didn't get shots and they defended us well."
The men will return to action Wednesday night against Alabama A&M at Memorial Gym.
The No. 17 women's squad had no luck in its Saturday travels either.
The Commodores were stunned at UC-Riverside, 50-47, as senior Christina Wirth's 17 points weren't enough for the visitors. The Commodores also had a terrible day shooting and were an anemic 1-14 from beyond the arc. Vanderbilt shot just 30.8 percent in the second half and did not score for the final 2:31 of the game.
However, the pre-season favorite to capture the Southeastern Conference championship is 8-2 through 10 games for the second straight year; over the last three seasons under coach Melanie Balcomb, the Commodores have a combined record of 25-5 through their first 10 games.
The Commodores have nearly two weeks until their next game at home against Tennessee State and will also play Tennessee-Martin, Liberty and Notre Dame in a homestand during Christmas break.
