NPHC fraternities move to new house
As the fall semester began and students settled into residence halls, National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities moved houses again.
Members of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma fraternities, who occupied the Kappa Sigma house during the last school year, moved into a four-bedroom house.
This move was caused by the return of Kappa Sigma colony to campus after a suspension in 2006. Kappa Sigma colony is the reincarnated Nu Society, which formed after Sigma Nu fraternity left campus. Director of Greek Life Kristin Torrey approved of the former Nu Society's return to campus.
"They wanted to be involved on campus and in the community service and philanthropy," said Torrey. "I think that they made a conscious choice in doing that and (made sure) that it was in everyone's best interest to do that."
While the NPHC fraternities do not have a house, they hope that in the future they can obtain a permanent residence.
"If we have a house where we can all meet, have fun, study and do a plethora of things together, it would make us have a stronger community in ourselves that hopefully reflects upon the entire Vanderbilt community," said NPHC President junior Chris Griffin.

Sigma Chi arrests
In late September, Sigma Chi fraternity experienced a situation involving an off-campus recruitment event, fireworks, underage drinking and disorderly conduct in Polk County, Tenn. Their behavior resulted in the arrests of 51 students, including many members of Sigma Chi fraternity. The men appeared in court in October, where they paid $50 in fines and $200 in court fees.

Chapters prepare for new members
As the fall semester ends, Panhellenic sororities and Interfraternity Council fraternities prepare themselves for new members in the spring. While NPHC organizations have a different membership intake process, they welcomed new members to Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta sorority and Sigma Lambda Gamma colony through three separate probates.
