Redshirt freshman linebacker Chris Marve was unanimously named to the All-Freshman team by the Southeastern Conference coaches, and tight end Brandon Barden, defensive tackle T.J. Greenstone and offensive tackle Kyle Fischer, all redshirt freshmen, also were named to the squad.
Marve was one of just four freshmen in the conference to be a unanimous selection after an outstanding year at the middle linebacker position. He was third in the nation among freshmen in tackles and led the Commodores in solo tackles with 51. The Memphis native also had three sacks and four forced fumbles on the year, including a memorable one at the Vanderbilt 2-yard line to preserve a 23-17 win over Ole Miss on Sept. 20.
Barden led the team in touchdown catches with four and Fischer was a much-needed physical addition to the starting offensive line midway through the season. Greenstone played in all 12 games and registered five tackles for loss and also recovered a fumble.
The players join a growing list of Commodores to receive conference recognition this season; juniors D.J. Moore and Patrick Benoist were named to the 1st and 2nd All-SEC Defensive teams, respectively, by both the Associated Press and the SEC coaches.
Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson was recognized along with Alabama's Nick Saban and Ole Miss' Houston Nutt as co-SEC coach of the Year after the Commodores achieved bowl eligibility for the first time in 26 years and reached their highest conference win total (4) since the conference split into West and East divisions in 1991.
