Do you remember the days when "Praise You" and "Weapon of Choice" dominated the airwaves? When Fatboy Slim was good, he was good - but he's been missing on the mainstream scene for a few years now. Seemingly, he went underground. Not to hide or to sleep, but rather to scheme. Scheme for a fantastic comeback, a rebirth into music, a revolution of the melding of mind and music. OK, that might be a little melodramatic - but Fatboy Slim (Norman Quentin Cook) is back with his new group Brighton Port Authority. And let me tell you - he brought his A-game.
Brighton Port Authority is a different kind of electronica. Slim has created some brand new tracks and recycled some classic samples. Same old game right? Nay, my friend. He then summoned some of the biggest names in indie, house music and rock 'n' roll to come sing on his newfangled tunes. David Byrne (most notably of the Talking Heads) and Iggy Pop (if you don't know this one, I pity you) are mixed in with indie favorites like Justin Robertson, Martha Wainwright and Emmy the Great.
If you're skeptical, I understand. However, just take a trip to the group's MySpace and check out two of their songs: "Seattle" (a mellower track reminiscent of Thievery Corporation) and "Toe Jam" (a rather eccentric, high energy piece that is toe-tappingly catchy). Trust me, they're fantastic.
