Vanderbilt's slide continued Wednesday with an 86-76 loss at South Carolina, its fourth in a row. The Commodores (12-8, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) remained winless on the road in SEC play and lost for the 14th time in the last 19 games on the road in conference play.

Trailing by 12 at halftime, Vanderbilt went on a 14-0 run and took a brief lead before the Gamecocks re-took the advantage for good thanks to junior guard Devan Downey, who scored 12 points in the second half. South Carolina went on an 11-0 run and took a 59-49 lead before slowly coasting to victory.

The game was very slow with a combined 56 fouls called on the Commodores and the Gamecocks. Vanderbilt's A.J. Ogilvy, Jeff Taylor and Steve Tchiengang all fouled out while South Carolina attempted 49 free throws, many coming in the final minutes as Vanderbilt made a futile attempt to play catch-up.

Taylor led all scorers with 23 points, with George Drake adding a career-high 18.

Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings was pleased with the effort of the Commodores in the physical game.

"They're fighting and practicing hard," Stallings said of his young players after the loss. "It's something you've got to fight through. We've got some guys hurt, we've got some guys sick. But we've got to find a way to win a game."

Vanderbilt's woes from beyond the arc continued with a 3-12 perfomance, with all of them made by Brad Tinsley. The Commodores committed 22 turnovers in the loss, which snapped a 5-game winning streak against South Carolina dating back three years.

Vanderbilt plays again Saturday at Auburn at 1 p.m.
