As of this morning, the Music Group has announced the primary lineup for Rites of Spring. The Music Group claims the lineup is representative of students' requests; however, there were some constraints. The most popular selection was Taylor Swift, but she was deemed too expensive and there was a question of her availability. Swift was not the only popular candidate who couldn't be booked.

Admittedly it is difficult to please all segments of such a sonically diverse campus as Vanderbilt. The Music Group, as usual, used surveys to get the consensus. Of course, the process isn't perfect - it is possible to vote more than once and it's difficult to fit everyone's taste in between pricing, availability and stage space. So while students might be a little let-down, the Flaming Lips are sure to impress.

The Flaming Lips, troubadours with a penchant for the overtly dramatic, have played recently all over the country including Bonnaroo and Birmingham City Stages in sequential years. Their most recent album, "At War with the Mystics," released by Warner in 2006, won a Grammy in the same year for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Recently, the Lips released a movie titled "Christmas on Mars," whose subject is fairly self-evident.

Besides the Flaming Lips, the Music Group promises N.E.R.D., Santigold, Q. Tip and Okkervil River. All things considered, Rites will be exciting.
