Vanderbilt University police officer John B. Newman, 38, was indicted by a grand jury in Williamson County last week for indecent exposure.

Newman is accused of exposing his genitals to female Kacie F. Dunavan while driving on Interstate 65 in Brentwood, Tenn. After the alleged exposure, Dunavan filed a report with the Brentwood Police Department.

On Friday, Newman was booked into the Williamson County jail, but released 45 minutes later after posting a $1,000 bond. On March 30, he is set to appear before a judge for arraignment.

According to a statement by Interim Chief of Police Cathy Ryan, he was placed on administrative leave on Jan. 15 when the university was informed of his investigation. Newman is also under an internal investigation that is being conducted by Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's Office of Professional Accountability.

Newman holds the rank of commander. He has been a Vanderbilt police officer since June 24, 2002 and is considered a senior officer.
